Correct stock under first in, first out
A mistake is corrected with an entry dated after the sales that relied on the stock as it stood, and every sale already costed keeps the cost it was posted at.
- Who this is for
- Owner, admin or bookkeeper whose company prices stock first in, first out. Weighted average companies are not affected.
- Before you start
- The message "Changing what came before it would change that posted cost" on a void, a return, a write-off or a backdated entry.
- Availability
- Available in the hosted app and the local build, for companies using first in, first out.
Steps
- Read the dates in the message. Stock that left on or after the first date was costed from the stock as it stood then, so nothing can change underneath it.
- A sale that should not have happened: void it dated on or after the last date in the message. Its units come back that day, to the receipts they came from, and are first in line for anything recorded after the void, that day included. Or keep the invoice and record a customer return linked to it.
- A delivery that was missed: record the bill dated on or after that date, not on the day it arrived.
- A write-off or count that was wrong: reverse it dated on or after that date, or record an adjustment the other way. For a whole count, use Reverse count on the count.
- Goods going back to a supplier: return them against the bill they came in on. They leave from that bill's own units, at their own cost, even if older stock is still on the shelf.
What you should see
The correction posts, Against the ledger still agrees, and no earlier cost of sales changes.
If it goes wrong
If the Overview says a product needs its stock history reviewed, an older version changed its history in a way first in, first out cannot price without someone checking it. Nothing more of it can be sold, written off or reversed until then; receiving more still works. See "Review stock history under first in, first out".
